The Level 4 lockdown in New Zealand was sudden and may have come as a shock to most. As most might know, Alert Level 4 means that all non-essential businesses are required to close. This includes gyms and other public fitness locations. Luckily, there are a few fitness-based companies still running up and running thanks to their lockdown online exercise classes.
.
Dance NZ is one of these businesses; if you’re new to the amazing classes of Dance NZ, this blog will explain what practice these classes teach, the type of classes available, and why it’s perfect over the course of this lockdown.
If you’re already an active member at Dance NZ, you may or may not be aware of the online classes available. This blog will detail what programs are running, and the best way to view and enjoy them in the comfort of your own home.

What Is Nia Dance and Why It’s Perfect for Lockdown
Nia Dance is a non-impact, holistic fitness style that incorporates 52 total movements into its routine. The great thing about Nia Dance is that it requires no equipment, not even shoes as it’s best performed barefoot! All you need to practice this dance form is yourself and space open enough to move around in.
Nia Dance is also a great way to stay social, even during the lockdown period. By connecting with peers on Zoom to participate in classes together, you can help keep your immune system strengthened by keeping up your levels of happiness through social connections.
On top of that, thanks to its unique blend of dance, martial, and healing arts, those who practice Nia Dance can experience a variety of other benefits. This includes mental, emotional, and physical benefits. Nia Dance can help with weight loss and maintenance, muscle building, posture assistance, and muscle toning.
It can also support cognitive and organ functions, reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, improve your circulation and cardiovascular system, and increase balance and coordination. All of which are important health benefits to consider during lockdown.

Dance NZ Classes and Accessing Them
There is a diverse range of lockdown online exercise classes available at Dance NZ that are specially designed to suit anybody’s specific needs or abilities. Classic Nia is ideal for all individuals and highly recommended if you’re an experienced dancer or fitness lover. Gentle Nia is perfect for beginners but also works well for individuals outside of that category.
Nia Dance Move to Heal is a class specialising in soft movements for those recovering from injuries or specific ailments. Nia for Parkinson’s Freedom Dance is a class designed and only available for individuals with Parkinson’s and their caregivers.
Accessing online classes for the first time? Not to worry, Dance NZ live streams all classes on the video-sharing application, Zoom. You may already have experience using Zoom from last year’s lockdown. If you haven’t, downloading Zoom and accessing your class on it is extremely easy. You can watch a YouTube tutorial on how to set up Zoom here, and also download the application here.
Zoom is available on most devices, such as tablets, laptops, or phones, however, it’s recommended to connect the device you’re using to a TV, to optimise your viewing. The larger the screen, the easier your class will be to view. There are a few options to transfer the video feed from your devices to your TV, using either a Chromecast or HDMI cable.
Replays For Those With Hectic Lockdown Schedules
Depending on your current occupation, you may still be required to work from home and not have the time to commit to a specific class. However, Dance NZ offers a solution for this too. 24-hour replays of different classes are available to purchase and can be browsed and bought here.
Replays are ready to watch for 24-hours and can be watched as many times as you like during this window. Moreover, this allows you to not feel pressured to commit to a specific class time, and gives you the freedom to rewind, fast-forward, and rewatch as much as you want.
