Exercise for people living with Parkinson’s is fundamental in managing this disorder of the body. A Parkinson’s person will greatly benefit from many forms of therapeutic exercise including dance therapy

A classic example of this is

Possible one of the most famous Parkinsons people ever! Muhammad Ali

Compared to other exercise classes recommended for Parkinson’s People such as boxing FREEDOM DANCE Nia for Parkinson’s is a safe environment for Parkinson’s people to feel a little themselves again.

This exercise class for Parkinson’s People is based in Hamilton and offers basic choreographed guided movement. The sequenced movement patterns are specifically designed for Parkinson’s people and are beneficial for the brain with coordination and balance and for enhancing fitness while strengthening the body.

The latest neuroplasticity science is a leading edge in rehabilitating a Parkinson’s person

In the Nia Technique is used to deliver movement in the form of gentle dance to beautiful music

During a FREEDOM DANCE class with Belinda Goodwin

Making the most of modern technology we are able to project a live video of us onto a screen in front, allowing dancers to see the teacher from the back and the front.

Muhammad Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1984 at the age of 42

So how can we encourage Parkinsons People to Exercise?

Parkinson’s people typically suffer from apathy and depression as well as being self-conscious about the slowness and uncontrollable movement in the form of Bradykinesia

In a comfortable familiar setting with other Parkinson’s people, Happiness is obtained by strengthening the social connections within the group. Therefore sparking a willingness to attend this weekly dance class.

Belinda Goodwin has been leading FREEDOM DANCE Nia for Parkinson’s in Hamilton since 2018. This class is certified with Waikato Strength and Balance Classes for Parkinsons people

Belinda has obtained advanced Certification in Dance for Parkinson’s Training in Wellington New Zealand and in New York.

With 8 to 10 regular dancers every week this class is for early-onset to moderate Parkinson’s People. We are a welcoming group and would love to have you join us. FREEDOM DANCE is available in our beautiful venue 20 Wellington Street Hamilton. Booking can be made online here or contact Belinda at niawithbelinda@gmail.com
