Are you recovering from an illness, surgery, or injury, and looking for healing in the form of fun and gentle exercise? Maybe you’ve nearly recovered and are looking for a fitness group to help ease you back into an active lifestyle? The Nia Technique is a combination of martial arts (like Tai Chi), healing arts (like Yoga), and dance arts (like modern dance or Duncan dance). It was designed to improve multiple areas within life and wellbeing, specifically mental, physical, and spiritual healing.

Dance NZ has a variety of classes that are easily accessible and open to those who might not have the mobility or ability to take part in more intense sessions.

How Can Nia Dance Help My Recovery Process?

“A back pain I had before starting Nia has disappeared. At the end of each session, I feel much more relaxed and happy.” – Margalit, Nia With Belinda student

In Nia Dance, there is no pressure to be perfect as it’s available to all levels of experience, so you can complete your routine with a level of comfort and without judgment. Physically, Nia Dance can improve functions of your body, such as agility, flexibility between joints, lung performance, and immune and nervous system performance. A common benefit is also pain relief. Nia Dance can also boost your positive emotions and energy, supplying you with a happier mood and calmer energy through your recovery process.

Nia With Belinda offers classes that are specialized for those in ACC recovery programs or for those who suffer from Parkinson’s, designed to supply the benefits of Nia Dance while catering to limited mobility and joint flexibility.

Nia Dance Move to Heal is a class open to those in the recovery stage of an injury or illness, and offers a significant amount of benefits despite being designed to be a gentler option than a Classic Nia class. It’s a class that only requires light movement, less flexibility, and can be attended as a physical lesson or over a live Zoom session.

Nia for Parkinson’s Freedom Dance is a class targeted and specifically created for those with Parkinson’s. Caregivers can also sit in and participate, in exercises that require a lesser amount of movement but still stimulate and improve mental and physical functions.

Like Nia Dance Move to Heal, Nia for Parkinson’s Freedom Dance is also available as a Zoom session as well as a physical class.

Are There Other Classes Available After I Recover?

Yes! Nia With Belinda provides other classes such as Classic Nia and Gentle Nia, both of which are ideal fitness classes for beginners and experienced dancers alike. These two classes are open to Zoom if you prefer participating in your own space, or physical sessions in Hamilton or Raglan that you can attend.
