Seven cycles are used in every Nia workout. Each cycle serves a distinct purpose and is tailored to meet the needs of various students to provide holistic conditioning. The Body’s Way tells us that we must pass through these cycles to maintain harmony and balance.

Cycles take into account the fact that you are never the same on any two days, or even from one minute to the next. The seven cycles are the same, but the Nia experience varies depending on the emphasis, music, moves, and class aim.

Cycle 1: Set the Focus and Intent – What You Place Your Attention On

What you focus on is what you pay attention to. The intent is what you want to happen. Your Nia teacher chooses a focus and intent before you arrive at class. You maintain your focus and intent throughout all seven cycles as the teacher instructs. This 3-5 minute cycle is used by teachers to communicate objective and subjective information that can improve your awareness and experience in class.

Cycle 2: Step In – Create the Space to Workout

Leaving distractions behind is the act of stepping in. By assisting you in creating space to work out, Stepping In promotes the body, mind, emotions, and spirit connection. As the starting point for all body-centred action, activate your sensory awareness.

This cycle can be initiated by literally taking a heel-first step in, or by any other gesture or movement that represents the activity of removing distractions. As you begin to move, step in to foster a more intimate contact between you and the teacher, and to invite everyone to step into their “now” bodies.

Cycle 3: Warm Up – Prepare Your Heart, Lungs, and 13 Joints

Warm Up – Prepare Your Heart, Lungs, and 13 Joints in Cycle 3

Warm up your body by actively stimulating the energy flow through your heart, lungs, and thirteen major joints. Warming up boosts your body’s heat and respiration while also allowing you to move in all three planes: low, middle, and high. This cycle is used by teachers to acquaint and familiarise students with the routines and music, as well as to invite them to perceive and dance in their “now” bodies. This cycle is also used by teachers to assess their students’ energy levels. As they warm up their bodies, students are encouraged to use their Conscious Personal Trainers (CPTs) to detect and activate the five feelings of fitness (FAMSS).

Cycle 4: Get Moving – Energize the Moves to Reach a Peak

Increased ranges of motion, speed, and intensity are used to condition the heart, lungs, muscles, and joints in getting Moving. Use speed and shorter and longer splashes of intensity to activate your cardiovascular system. Move more fluidly through space and the three-movement planes: low, medium, and high. This cycle can entail moving down to the floor and then back up to standing for Athletic Nia.

Timing, transition, posture, shifting body weight, flexibility, personalisation, intensity levels and planes, and self-expression are all topics covered in Cycle 4.

Cycle 5: Cool Down – Calm, Harmonize, and Re-centre

Reduce the intensity of your workout, slow down your pace, and allow your heart rate to calm down. Stretch, re-centre, contemplate and be ready to move your body towards the floor by activating your Conscious Personal Trainer. Observe the results of your previous movement and make decisions and modifications to improve your body’s flexibility and balance.

Cycle 5 calms the neurological system, cardiovascular system, and respiratory system at a rate that promotes balance and harmony throughout the body.

Cycle 6: Floorplay – Fitness on the Floor

Cycle 6 incorporates both freeform (dancing) and regimented movement sequences. The flow of all floor play action is guided by sound and quiet, music or no music. To actively guide the movement, the word “play,” vowel sounds, brief words, and emotive sounds are used. The exercises are straightforward and were chosen to target specific physical needs based on previous body usage. Kneepads, carpeting, and mats can all be utilised to assist the body in moving more freely and comfortably.

Cycle 7: Step Out – Transition Into Your Next Activity

Step Out by focusing on the fitness and self-healing benefits you’ve gained from your exercise as you go on to your next activity. Stepping out is a physical gesture that signifies the end of each lesson.

The 7 Cycles of Nia Dance

The routine of movements that make up Nia Dance is known as cycles, for which there are 7 that complete a Nia workout. Throughout each of these cycles, the movements you’ll be performing are non-impact, adaptable and are inspired by nine different techniques originating from martial, dance and healing movement arts.

The first cycle is known as the cycle of setting your focus and intent. Roughly three to five minutes long, this cycle involves your Nia Dance instructor sharing the class focus and intent, and guiding everyone’s attention on this information and goals to make the most of your class experience and performance.

In cycle two, you will be “stepping in”. You’ll be performing movements that will heighten your sensory awareness, which will, in turn, lead you to be fully focused on your body and allow for distractions to melt away. Movements in this cycle will help your mind, body and soul to be properly stimulated.

Cycle three, known as the Warm-Up, will prepare your body for the next cycles by increasing the flow of energy through your body, primarily through your heart, lungs and 13 of your main bodily joints. This cycle is also utilised by Nia instructors for new students to familiarise them with the new music, movement and rhythm of Nia Dance.

In cycle 4, “Get Moving”, the range and speed of movements increase from the previous cycle. This is to energise your joints, lungs, cardiovascular system, heart and muscles. The intensity is higher but can still be adapted to lower levels; listen to your body! Cycle 5 is about Cooling Down, meaning movements decrease in speed, range and intensity. In turn, this allows you to calm your heart rate, nervous system and respiratory system to harmonise and re-centre your mind and body.

Cycle 6 is commonly known as “Floor Play”. Movements are taken onto the floor to utilise elements such as gravity, sound, and space to help your body focus on its stability, mobility, flexibility, agility and strength. You have the option in this cycle to really take advantage of your wide-open space by using your body’s weight to help condition your bodily strength and stretch. The last cycle, cycle 7 or “Step Out”, is about transitioning back to your day-to-day activities and life from your routine. This cycle helps to create awareness of all the fitness, health and healing benefits you’ve received through reflections, centring and harmonising with yourself.

Gentle Nia is the polar opposite, with gentle, uncomplicated motions that are readily adapted for people with limited mobility or elders.

The technique we’ll be talking about today is known as Nia Dance. Briefly mentioned in the previous paragraph, Nia Dance is an extremely adaptable form of exercise, meaning you can change movements to suit your body rather than strain it and still receive all of its benefits. Nia movement’s high changeability reduces the risk of further injury or exhaustion and makes participating more enjoyable, meaning you’ll want to take part more often rather than hate the exercise you’re doing.

Nia Dance is also a non-impact type of fitness, which means that the intensity level is quite low and movements are gentle and non-complex. This is ideal as a senior, especially if you’re new to the fitness or dance scene or have issues with mobility, pain or injuries. If you find that you have an amazing range of motion in your upper body but not so much in your lower body, which is common among seniors, Nia Dance can even cater to that too! Nia Dance can be performed while sitting down using only the range of your upper body; this method is quite commonly used!

Made up of 7 unique cycles, Nia Dance can stimulate not only your body but your mind and soul through the methods used in these cycles as well as the incorporation of mindfulness techniques. You can read about these cycles in our blog here.

Despite all its gentle movements and ability to be easily changed to suit your needs, Nia Dance is extremely effective with the benefits it provides. Some of the most commonly reported benefits of Nia Dance includes better hand-eye coordination and balance, improved spinal support and posture, increased abilities with movement and flexibility, pain relief, better muscular strength, higher circulation, improved organ and cognitive functioning, and strengthened cardiovascular system.

Have you ever wanted to participate in dance or forms of fitness but found that the movements are too harsh on your body? Whether you’re unable to match face-paced or intense movements due to your mobility, flexibility, or other specific abilities or injuries, it can be sad to miss out on participating. Finding the right exercise to suit your needs and goals, while also providing gentle movements can be difficult. Luckily, today we’ll be talking about a gentle movement class in Raglan that is a perfect softer exercise.

Guide Your Body Through Gentle Movements With Nia Dance

Nia Dance is a beautiful dance style that was created to provide not only healing benefits but to be adapted to suit any person’s needs and abilities. During a Nia exercise, you’ll be taken through seven distinct cycles. Each cycle has a varied effect on your body, with movement speed and style changing each cycle to deliver a range of different advantages and stimulate different parts of your body and mind.

No matter your abilities, each cycle can easily be adapted to what your body needs and can perform. Anyone, regardless of gender, age, or unique needs and abilities, can engage in Nia Dance. Being able to adapt and easily change movements to suit your body can significantly lower the chance of injury while also reducing exhaustion and muscle aches. Listening to your body also allows you to show off your distinct personality in the dance.

Some benefits of Nia Dance most commonly include mental clarity, a more enjoyable view on life, weight loss, a greater positive attitude, calmer energy, higher productivity, muscular toning, improved spinal posture, increased endurance, higher levels of mobility and flexibility, enhanced balance and coordination, better circulation, and improved cognitive and organ performance.

Aside from the cycles and adaptability of Nia Dance, the music played during exercises is equally important in making the routine more gentle. Nia Dance music is specifically chosen to stimulate your nervous system, generate sensations of calm by binaural frequencies, and open and activate your body’s seven chakras. Nia Dance music is sometimes described as beautiful and harmonic, and it utilises a wide range of instruments and chords to bring a sense of tranquillity to your routine. The music will help you ease through cycles gently and allow movements to flow through your body in a soft manner.

Participate In Gentle Nia at Dance NZ

Dance NZ has 5 distinct Nia Dance courses available, both online and in the Hamilton and Raglan areas. This Nia Dance group is one of the few in New Zealand that offers Nia Dance classes through the internet and physically. For those who can’t make it to class, want to receive some extra guided practice, or would prefer performing at their own pace and time, 24-hour class recordings are now available for purchase on the Dance NZ site here.

Gentle Nia, one of the five classes available at Dance NZ, is ideal for folks who need soothing movements that aren’t complex and don’t require intense mobility. Your instructor, Belinda Goodwin, has carefully adapted the movements of Gentle Nia to be able to provide the benefits of Nia Dance while having her students use lower levels of mobility and flexibility. In fact, this class can even be done while sitting and using only your upper body and you can still enjoy all of the benefits of Nia Dance.

There’s also a special offer to first-time Dance NZ members! Are you wanting to participate in Nia Dance but you’re still hesitant if it’s right for you? You can book 3 classes of your choice for only $15 which is $5 per class! This allows you to try Nia Dance classes at Dance NZ for the first time at a discounted price, so there’s no harm if you don’t enjoy it!

The Wonders Nia Dance Has On Your Health

The healthy dance classes in Hamilton that we’re talking about today is the holistic dance style known as Nia Dance. This movement technique has 52 movements and 7 cycles, each action and cycle providing different benefits and stimulating different parts of your body and mind. Some of these cycles involve setting your focus and intent (Cycle 1), harmonising with and recentering your body (Cool Down – Cycle 5), and having fitness down completely on the floor (Floor Play – Cycle 6). The movements of Nia Dance take inspiration from nine different movement arts, including healing arts like yoga, martial arts like tai-chi, and dance arts like jazz.

This mixture of cycles and movements are all low-impact and highly adaptable which allows everybody to be able to participate in Nia Dance and take important care of their health. Being accessible to anyone also allows you to participate with a diverse range of people and meet types of individuals you may never have had the right environment of meeting under.

Some commonly reported benefits of Nia Dance include, but are not limited to, improved circulation, weight loss, increased muscle strength and toning, pain relief, higher levels of mobility and flexibility, better sensory awareness, calmer moods, higher productivity, a happier attitude, heightened spiritual connection and improved organ and cognitive function.

Nia Dance, or more commonly known as the Nia Technique, is a unique and carefully designed holistic movement form. Its composition follows the design of the human body closely, including the nervous system, cognitive and organ system, and muscle and joint structure. This blog will be talking about the 7 cycles of Nia Dance, the benefits that are a result of consistent participation, and special Nia Dance classes available at Dance NZ.

If you’ve never heard of Nia Dance before, don’t worry! Although commonly practiced worldwide, there are still a large majority of people who don’t know what Nia Dance is. Nia Dance is a style of dance fitness that consists of 52 non-impact and highly adaptable movements.

Just one Nia workout can leave you with several benefits. But you may be wondering how Nia Dance is able to accommodate to such a diverse range of individuals yet offer so many advantages. Well, Nia Dance, including its teachings and movements, is inspired by 3 martial, 3 healing, and 3 dance arts. Some of these movement arts include tai-chi, yoga, Duncan dance, and aikido.

This combination that lives within each Nia Dance movement, as well as its careful attention to the human body, is what opens Nia Dance up to be practiced by anybody in hundreds of different styles while still providing fantastic health, mental, social and spiritual benefits.

Floor Play in Nia Dance

Many different techniques within Nia Dance also help provide healing benefits to all aspects of your life. Floor Play is a part of the 7 cycles of Nia Dance (the sixth cycle) and utilises the floor, gravity and other tools that enhance the experience of performing Nia Dance. This unique technique affects and strengthens your entire body, from the top of your head to the tips of your toes.

By using the formation of creating the focus, stepping in, warming up, get moving, cooling down, floor play then stepping out; Nia Dance Floor Play, by blending all movements, provides further relaxation, fun, stronger agility, improved mobility, increased energy, and more flexibility. Floor Play in Nia Dance also allows individuals to be able to move in a completely new way in a safe, positive, and energising environment.

Cool Down Cycle in Nia Dance

The Cool Down Cycle is the fifth cycle within the 7 cycles of Nia Dance that significantly benefits you. This part of the cycle was incorporated to re-centre you, and calm your body in beautiful harmony. The routine within this cycle involves easing the body into stretches, generally after a full-body Classic or Gentle Nia. The Cool Down Cycle momentarily decreases the level of intensity and speed of the workout which allows for your heart rate to slow down and for your body, including the nervous, respiratory and cardiovascular system, to cool down and create stability.
