Dance NZ, a Nia Dance group headquartered in Hamilton and Raglan, organizes these lessons. <a href="http://dancenz.co.nz/live-classes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Other classes</a>, suitable for a variety of abilities and types of people, can be found listed below the Book Now header of this blog post if you&#8217;re interested. <a href="http://dancenz.co.nz/online-experienced-dance-classes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Classic Nia</a>, while accessible for everyone, is best suited to <a href="https://www.steezy.co/posts/how-to-dance-with-more-confidence#:~:text=The%20more%20you%20work%20on,to%20become%20more%20self%2Dassured." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">experienced dancers</a> or those with confidence in their mobility. <p>Belinda Goodwin, your Classic Nia instructor as well as all other Dance NZ programs, ensures that you get the most out of each session and aims to teach Nia Dance at all levels in a friendly, non-judgmental, and happy atmosphere. She just obtained her <a href="http://www.niasouthafrica.co.za/nia-belt-system" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brown belt in the Nia Technique</a>, indicating that she is a skilled and educated Nia Dance instructor. Belinda offers many levels of difficulty in which routines may engage in each session, so you can be sure there is one that is appropriate for you. If you want to improve, you may even put yourself and your talents to the test.</p>

<p>Don&#8217;t worry if you can&#8217;t commit to a certain lesson time and day. This includes <a href="https://www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/what-s-the-point-gyms-and-dance-studios-weigh-future-in-covid-19-era-20210622-p58362.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gyms, studios</a>, and a variety of <a href="https://www.cityfitness.co.nz/fitness-classes" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">classes to keep you active</a>. Your beginner&#8217;s dance class at <a href="http://dancenz.co.nz" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dance NZ</a> is no exception. It will be providing in-person classes during level 2 as well as online classes for individuals located in Auckland or overseas!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Art of Nia Dance</h2>



<p><a href="https://nianow.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nia Dance</a> is a <a href="https://www.propdanceculture.com/lessons/what-is-holistic-movement/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">holistic movement art</a> that is commonly performed by individuals as a form of exercise, as a <a href="https://psychcentral.com/blog/1-minute-mindfulness-exercises" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mindfulness technique</a>, as a <a href="https://www.healthnavigator.org.nz/healthy-living/p/physical-activity-mental-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">physical and mental health practice</a>, or all of the above! Many people have different reasons for practicing Nia Dance, however no matter your goals or reasons, the Nia Technique is perfect for everyone.</p>



<p>If you&#8217;re a <a href="https://www.realbuzz.com/articles-interests/sports-activities/article/five-tips-for-dance-beginners/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">beginner in dance</a>, Nia Dance is an ideal movement form to introduce to the world of dance and is perfect for advanced dancers too, so you can stick with Nia Dance even after you become more experienced.</p>



<p>There are 52 movements in total that makeup Nia Dance and each movement is inspired by one of 9 different arts that originate from a <a href="https://www.shenyunperformingarts.org/news/view/article/e/qRwMbseulI0/kung-fu-chinese-dance-wu-shu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">martial, dance</a>, or <a href="https://www.montefiore.org/healingarts-what-are-the-healing-arts" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">healing art</a>. Some of these 9 arts include <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/stress-management/in-depth/tai-chi/art-20045184" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tai-chi</a>, the <a href="https://alexandertechnique.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alexander technique</a>, and <a href="https://www.houseofyoga.co.nz/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">yoga</a> to name a few.</p>

Dance NZ produces 5 different Nia Dance classes online through <a href="https://zoom.us/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Zoom</a>, and in-person in the Hamilton and Raglan area.</p>



<p>Gentle Nia classes are appropriate for people who are <a href="https://www.everyoneactive.com/content-hub/fitness/top-10-tips-beginners/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">new to dance, new to fitness</a>, or who require moves that use lower levels of mobility. This class, as well as all other classes at Dance NZ, provides a safe, pleasant, and judgment-free environment for everyone. You&#8217;ll find your classmates and teacher, Belinda Goodwin, to be passionate, helpful, and easy to make new social relationships with, so you won&#8217;t feel alone!</p>

<p>Classic Nia is available in two classes, each occurring at a different date and time of the week. These classes are carried out by Dance NZ, a Hamilton and Raglan-based Nia Dance company. There are also other classes available, ideal for other scenarios, that you can find listed below the Book Now heading of this blog.</p>

<p>Classic Nia, although suitable for all individuals, is most ideal for experienced dancers. The movements within this class require higher levels of mobility and flexibility although movements can be adapted. Your teacher for Classic Nia, as well as all other classes at Dance NZ, Belinda Goodwin, ensures you get the most out of each class and strives to teach Nia Dance at various levels in a supportive, non-judgemental and positive environment.</p>

<p>She has recently received her brown belt in the Nia Technique, making her a highly advanced and knowledgeable Nia Dance teacher. Belinda provides different levels of difficulty that routines can participate in each class, so you know there&#8217;s a level that is right for you. You can even challenge yourself and your abilities if you want to grow.</p>

<h2>Accessibility</h2>
<p>Currently, Classic Nia as well as other Dance NZ classes are only available online due to lockdown. However, in-person classes will be returning after lockdown has moved back down to Alert Level 2. Online sessions at Dance NZ are held via Zoom, a video-sharing website that can be downloaded here.</p>

<h2>Accessing Nia Dance From Home</h2>
<p>Below we have included a video of Belinda, your teacher at Dance NZ, teaching classes from her home as well as a perspective from her TV where you can see what dancing with her over Zoom would look like.</p>

<p>You and your peers participating in Dance NZ classes are the small windows at the top, with Belinda&#8217;s camera being the main, larger image so you can see the movements and routine in perfect detail. As you can see along the top, some Dance NZ students have their camera on and others have it off. Depending on what makes you feel the most comfortable, you have the option of leaving your camera and microphone on.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Having it on can provide a deeper connection to the class and allow your teacher to see how you&#8217;re performing the movements. Leaving your camera and microphone off is also completely fine and may provide a high level of comfortability and optimise your participation.</p>

<p>All of Dance NZ&#8217;s lessons are live-streamed on Zoom, a video-sharing app. You may have used Zoom before during lockdown last year or this year. If you haven&#8217;t already done so, downloading Zoom and using it to access your class is really simple. You can view a YouTube tutorial here on how to set up Zoom if you are unfamiliar.</p>

<p>Zoom is available on most platforms, including tablets, laptops, and smartphones; but, to get the most out of your viewing experience, you should connect your device to a television. The larger the screen, the simpler it will be to see your class.</p>

<p>An amazing Parkinson&#8217;s fitness class in Hamilton, Nia for Parkinson&#8217;s Freedom Dance is a Dance NZ class specifically intended for people with Parkinson&#8217;s. This is a Waikato Strength and Balance approved class for elders and individuals with limited mobility. Only people with Parkinson&#8217;s and their carers are eligible to participate in Nia for Parkinson&#8217;s Freedom Dance.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>This class incorporates Nia Dance movements that have been modified to be gentler and less intense than those seen in regular Dance NZ classes. Nia For Parkinson&#8217;s Freedom Dance, like all other Dance NZ classes, seeks to create a fun, calm, and judgment-free atmosphere. Classes also aim to create supportive social interactions with peers and the teacher.</p>

<p>Belinda Goodwin, your Dance NZ instructor, has customised these Nia Dance techniques to focus on developing brain coordination and balance, as well as increasing joint and muscular strength. She is also a trained work first aider and has advanced certifications in dancing workshops and seminars for Parkinson&#8217;s.</p>

It&#8217;s offered as a physical class. If you can&#8217;t access in-person classes, not to worry! <p>Dance NZ is one of the few Nia Dance companies within New Zealand and is currently based in the Hamilton and Raglan area. <p>The most ideal class for skilled dancers and active individuals at Dance NZ is Classic Nia, a class that takes place every Tuesday and Friday in Hamilton. Just like all other classes at Dance NZ, Classic Nia has the option of being viewed and attended in-person, or online via a live <a href="https://zoom.us/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Zoom</a> call or <a href="http://dancenz.co.nz/buy-a-replay/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">24-hour purchasable replays</a>. Replays or Zoom sessions are perfect for participating at home, but if you prefer participating in social groups, you&#8217;ll fina Classic Nia classes, just like all other classes, to provide a supportive, welcoming, and judgment-free environment with your teacher and peers.</p>

<p>You&#8217;ll also have an extremely talented teacher guiding you in each class and helping you practice the technique, ensuring you get the most out of Nia Dance. Belinda Goodwin is a trained Nia Dance teacher, having completed her white, blue, and green belt in the Nia Technique and currently progressing through her brown belt. Within each class, Belinda also ensures that each movement can be done at various levels of difficulty so you can challenge yourself and stick to what you know.</p>

<p>With three different options available, you can feel comfortable in an environment you like best while trying Nia Dance for the first time. Even if you&#8217;re a skilled dancer and are confident in your abilities, you also have the option of joining Gentle Nia, a more beginner-level class, if you want an easier introduction to Nia Dance. All other classes available are listed below, although please note that Nia for Parkinson&#8217;s Freedom Dance is only available to individuals with Parkinson&#8217;s and their caregivers.</p>
